The 2008 SPE Russian and Caspian Regional Student Paper Contest will be held during the SPE Russian Oil and Gas Technical Conference and Exhibition (ROG) at the All-Russia Exhibition Center (ВВЦ) from October 28 – 30, 2008

2008 SPE RUSSIAN AND CASPIAN REGIONAL STUDENT PAPER CONTEST

28 – 30 OCTOBER 2008 MOSCOW, RUSSIA

Don’t miss your chance to take part in the 2008 Russian and Caspian Regional Student Paper Contest being held in conjunction with the 2008 Russian Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition, Moscow, Russia.

The contest will be divided into two divisions – Undergraduate Division and Postgraduate Division (Diploma and Candidate).  The submitted abstracts will be judged and one student will be selected for each division from each student chapter and invited to participate in the paper contest during the 2008 Russian Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition. Please read attached guidelines for further information.  The contest will be simultaneously translated in both Russian and English. 

Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners, and the first place winner in each division will receive up to US $3,000 for travel and expenses for the International SPE student paper contest to be held at the 2009 SPE ATCE in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

Participants will be provided with an accommodation and travel allowance which will be paid at the contest.   Please note that only economy travel will be reimbursed and should be arranged with the help of the organizing committee.  Please note that you must provide clear documentation of expenses at the contest in order to receive reimbursement, without original receipts SPE will not refund travel expenses.

Entrance Requirements

  • Contestants must be SPE members in good standing at the time of application.
  • Only students enrolled as full-time students are eligible to participate in the contest. The definition of "full time" is that which applies to the student\'s school; however, a student taking less than the equivalent of six credit hours is not eligible.

Contestants who have already earned a degree must have completed their academic work for the division in which they are competing less than nine months before the contest. Contestants who have completed the work at the end of the spring semester are eligible to compete in the contest held the following fall, and contestants who have completed their work in the winter or summer are eligible to compete the following spring or fall.

Rules on Form and Content of Presentation/Paper

  • Only single-author presentation/papers are eligible. The definition of single-author is a student that has contributed significantly to the presentation/paper even though other researchers or contributors may have been involved. Researchers and contributors must be acknowledged in the paper and presentation. 
  • Papers should present, as completely as possible, the original work of the author in planning the investigation, performing the work, interpreting the results, and preparing the presentation/paper. 
  • The subject of a presentation/paper must be related to petroleum engineering, which is defined as the application of basic and engineering sciences to the finding, development, and recovery of oil, gas, and other resources from wells.  
  • A presentation/paper based on course work, including theses and dissertations, is eligible. 
  • The presentation/paper must not have been either accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal at the time of submission for the contest or presented at a previous SPE Regional Student Presentation/Paper Contest. (This provision would not preclude prior presentation at meetings such  as Student Presentation/Paper Contests sponsored by schools, SPE sections, or other organizations.)  
  • The presentation/paper must be presented in English or Russian.  Please note however that the winner of each division will be required to present in English at the International Student Paper Contest.  If this is not possible, the person in 2nd place may be asked to take part in the international contest instead.  
  • The talk may not exceed 20 minutes. You will then have 10 minutes for questions from the judges only.
