In all drilling environments, effectiveness of conducted jobs depends on proper drill bit selection, since it’s the first element of BHA to touch the bottomhole and actually crush the rock.

It has recently been shown in many studies that instable bit-rock interaction might be the root cause of intensive bottom hole vibrations, premature bit cutting structure and tools damage, reduced distances drilled. In addition, sudden changes in geological characteristics and low level of bottom hole drilling parameters control often lead to decreased penetration rates and overall performance. To aid these and other related issues, drill bit companies strive to create rock-crushing instruments for improved results in less round-trips. The lecture provides an overview of Baker Hughes in-house hybrid drill bit technology and discusses suitable applications for its implementation. It covers case histories from worldwide and particularly recent success in Caspian region, as well as current opportunities across Russia.
