Workshop Description

The critical task for increase of oil production efficiency and extension of mature fields’ lifetime is optimization of waterflood systems. Waterflood optimization is a complex of technical solutions including the analysis of injection and production wells’ performance, waterflood front “behavior” along with geological reviews of reservoirs and residual recoverable reserves. The analysis accuracy depends on the availability of sufficient data acquired from drilling and well monitoring, as well as on understanding of the reservoir structure and characteristics. Data acquisition is a key to the overall optimization process and is focused on monitoring of injection and intake rates, determination of water breakthrough reasons and water sources in specific wells and how residual reserves are distributed. Waterflood optimization plan is developed on the basis of waterflood design and geological surveillance. Accurate selection and optimization of waterflood management methods is a key to efficient development of mature fields. Russian oil and gas operators have a wide experience in waterflood management and optimization.

During this workshop the companies will have an opportunity to discuss the main operational and development issues, new methods for sweep efficiency increase and field development processes. Our goal is to ensure this Workshop is attended by representatives of the major production and service companies and is an exemplar forum for a free dialogue to share experience, learn various approaches to waterflood optimization and performance evaluation, discuss the  economical aspects for development of mature fields with waterflooding.

The Workshop Program Committee comprises the experts representing national and international petroleum companies operating in Russia:

Мikhail Chertenkov, LUKOIL – Co-Chair

Session 5 – New Technology, "Non-traditional" Methods including: a) Waterflood effectiveness in low permeability and/or heterogeneous reservoirs. Waterflooding in developments with massive fracs or horizontal wells; b) Waterflooding special features and effectiveness in carbonate reservoirs; c) New technologies to increase recovery factor- eg Low Salinity Waterflood, change of streamlines by deep penetrating gels; d) 3D-4D Seismic for Waterflooding.

Discussion Session - Well & Reservoir Review (Pattern) – quarterly or annual.

Call for Papers

If you are interested to speak at the workshop, please send your presentation abstract (2-3 paragraphs with description of nature and scope of work, possible applications and summary of results or technical contributions) to Ul’yana Dmitrieva at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. not later than October 25th, 2011. Your abstract will be reviewed by the Committee to consider its acceptance for the Workshop Programme. The preference will be given to presentations that precisely correspond to the above listed themes and demonstrate the most illustrative cases providing the combination of experience and innovations, application of traditional and advanced practices.

Poster Session

As an adjunct to the scheduled presentations, the Programme Committee will incorporate a poster presentation session in this Workshop. The poster session will allow participants an opportunity to present additional new ideas to those interested.

The participants who want to participate in the poster session shall contact SPE Moscow office at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to receive the requirements for poster preparation and selection for the Workshop.
